2021 Year in Review

After closing out 2021, we want to take a moment to reflect on where we’ve been and where we’re going.

We started the year in January with our employees working remotely as the virus continued to surge. Our administration worked hard to keep us connected through Zoom meetings, phone calls to check-in on their fellow employee-owners, and fun videos showing Christmas cards and life events.

When we returned to the office at 100% capacity a few months later, we did so with continued precautions to keep our HIG family safe and healthy, and even though we couldn’t see the bottom half of our coworkers’ faces, we were just happy to be back together in the safest way we knew how. Our clients were still recovering from all that 2020 brought on and we were there to walk that journey right beside them.

Then we made it to the Fall and really were getting back into the swing of “business as usual”! We were able to celebrate all our entities combining under one common brand of Houchens Insurance Group on 10/1/2021. We all joined in on a companywide virtual meeting for a look back at our historical agencies (one of which celebrated 100 years of service this year!) and what all they have each accomplished on their own while also looking to the future at what all we will accomplish together as HIG.

As we approached the holidays, we did our best to show our appreciation for one another and celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas safely, though we are still anxiously awaiting the day that we can all be back together for holiday meals and events! And then, just as we were all closing out the year, disaster struck when an EF-3 tornado ripped through Western Kentucky. So many of our neighbors and loved ones were deeply affected by this tragic event, including many of our clients and even some of our employee-owners.

Our HIG team didn’t hesitate to jump right in, donating money, clothes, and food, as well as time and physical efforts to help the rebuilding process in our very own backyard in Bowling Green. Our employee-owners responded without question, donating over $40,000 to give to the Hope and Peace Foundation. When Monday morning came, we had over 40 volunteers ready to get into the community to cut down trees, pick up limbs, and organize donation centers. And maybe most importantly, our claims team was setup at a satellite location with access to power and internet by 5am that Saturday morning (just hours after the tornadoes) taking calls and submitting claims to make sure our clients were taken care of.

HIG has seen another year of ups and downs, masks and no masks, and natural disasters, but we have come through it stronger than before and prepared to take on 2022 because we know we are Better Together.
