The year is 1921, 100 years ago. After the pain of the First World War, a hopeful America is at the start of a decade of prosperity known as the “Roaring 20s.” This was the decade of Prohibition, speakeasies, flappers, and extravagance . In 1921, Warren G.Harding took office as president, Babe Ruth broke the home run record, and Ed Roeding started his insurance agency, Roeding Insurance.
In those early years, Roeding Insurance was just a small, two or-three -person P&C agency in Covington, KY. Ed Roeding had established himself as a well-respected, small business owner in the tight-knit Northern Kentucky community.
Fast forward to 1962. Ed’s son, Ted Roeding, joined the agency and took the reins of management in 1972 after Ed’s passing.Ted’s goal was to take the agency to the next level, so he ventured more into commercial lines, hired a few more people and brought his three younger brothers into the business, Roger, Ken, and Steve. Because of Ted’s vision, the agency continued toexperience tremendous growth during the 80s and 90s.
Steve Roeding, Ed’s son, who joined the company in 1976 and served as President for 15 of his 45-year career with the agency, explained what truly made the company successful. “You know, it’s all about the people. I don’t think much about how we wentfrom a tiny office in Covington to a larger one in Florence in 1976 and then a 13,000 square foot facility in Crestview Hills.
Or how we went from six-figure annual revenues to over $13 million today. No…l think about the people, the relationships, and opportunities that we’ve developed over the years.”
In 2013, Roeding Insurance merged with Houchens Insurance Group, which allowed the dedicated employees to enjoy the benefits and security of ownership by becoming stockholders in one of the largest and strongest ESOPs in the world. Today, Roeding Insurance is one of the largest independently owned insurance and financial services agencies in the Cincinnati Tri-State area and the state of Kentucky.
Current President of Roeding Insurance, Sue Porter, reflected on the past and looked forward to the future with the following comments: “We are thankful for our past and the leadership and foresight that Ed had established, and for his sons, Ted, Roger, Ken and Steve, for continuing his legacy. Sue continued, “We pledge to carry forward the principles, integrity, andcommitment to excellence shown to us by the Roeding family and to continue to demonstrate these qualities to our customers aswe serve our community. “
As demonstrated in the last 100 years, the agency looks forward to continuing its growth and commitment to the community as a member of an expanded family, Houchens Insurance Group.
